Winter Break in Europe

What if you want to get the most out of your adventure this winter to discover the magic of Europe. Imagine you whiz down the snowy slopes and fairytale villages sipping hot chocolate to warming in the cab of a train. The journey in winter can be a magical experience, especially if you choose the right moment and destinations to explore with an adventure you will never forget.

And that’s where skyscanner comes to the rescue where this winter we admire the sleds pulled by reindeer and snowmobile in Finland and immerse ourselves in the icy winter of Rovaniemi, where we will find lots of fun and winter activities suitable for the whole family.

It is also said to be the home of Santa Claus where children can go on a sleigh pulled by reindeer guided by traditional Sámi and adults can enjoy a snowmobile ride on powder snow. Lapland Safaris arranges all of these experiences, in addition to fishing on the ice, hiking with snowshoes and other winter activities, something that is an unforgettable experience.

From Helsinki Northern Lights in Swedish Lapland beckon where each winter, the skies of northern Europe come alive with vibrant colours and sparkling dancing. Abisko, in Sweden, is one of the best places in the world where you can see the Northern Lights. Located 200 km north of the Arctic Circle, this pristine area is located near the auroral oval and its skies are rarely cloudy, thanks to the 60 mountains that surround it.

Thereon we reach Norway and we hop on the scenic Flam Railway in Norway, a unique experience of its kind, which cannot be missed in the itinerary of all lovers of train travel with one of the world's steepest railway lines, leading to spectacular waterfalls, through snow-capped mountains, a journey that ends in the Norwegian fjords. Trains in old vintage style meander through deep gorges, climbing firmly on the steep sides of the mountains. Built by pioneers in the field, this railway line is 20.2 km long that, runs between Myrdal and Flåm and is still considered a masterpiece of Norway.

We then visit the Christmas Markets when during every Christmas in Germany is awash with the vibrant and contagious party atmosphere of its locals and tourists who flock to Christmas markets in search of wine heated with spices, cookies, gingerbread and fairy lights. Some of the most famous Christmas markets are located in Cologne, just below the Cathedral, UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the Gothic town hall in the Marienplatz in Monaco. Our favourite is the Christmas market in Dresden, known as Striezelmarkt, the oldest in Germany.

We then cruise through Austria through scenic drives to Salzburg where it was filmed the movie "The Sound of Music" and then, pass the majestic Alps to Zurich.

From Zurich, after a short drive we will arrive on the shores of Lake Lucerne where you can experience one of the most exciting train journeys in the Wilhelm Tell Express, which begins on a wheel steamer on the lake and ends with a train journey between the gorges to Lugano.

As a fan of the snow we will spend the night in an igloo in Iglu-Dorf, the land of the igloos, and test what it means to live in sub-zero.  Iglu-Dorf offers warm accommodations in cold domes made, as you can well imagine, in snow, immersed in natural scenery of snow-capped mountains. Every winter, the igloos are built from scratch, with different architectures, and then removed at the end of the season. Iglu-Dorf has locations in Zermatt, Davos, Gstaad and Engelberg.

We then discover the best of Switzerland on the Glacier Express. Celebrated as one of the most famous railway lines in the world, the Glacier Express is a luxury experience that brings together in one trip all the best views of Switzerland. The route between Zermatt and Davos or St. Moritz, cross meandering rivers, frozen lakes, steep slopes and countless mountain town in the Swiss Alps. Apart from the views, the journey itself is an adventure epic sweeps across 291 bridges and 91 tunnels, viaducts and endless steps and climbed up to altitudes of 2,033 meters (6,670 feet) with the entire trip takes only 8 hours.

Then we experience the Bernina Express, Another train journey not to be missed, the highest mountain railway in the Alps, surrounded by the stunning views of glaciers and mountains of the area. A part of the trip the portion between Thusis and Tirano was also ranked among the world heritage site by UNESCO. The route connects Chur, Switzerland to Tirano, Italy, and it takes only 4 hours to cross 196 bridges and 55 tunnels. The train travels throughout the year, except on national holidays.

The next leg of our journey would be Italy visiting Milan and Venice and then move to Tuscany to go to Florence and Siena. Afterwards we would arrive in Rome that really delivers a lot of things to see, including the Colosseum and the Vatican City.

There is no better place to greet the arrival of the new year than to be at one of the largest European capitals, London. Each year, more than 250,000 people gather on the banks of the Thames under Big Ben to the countdown and watch the sky illuminated by fireworks and light shows. And in the 1st day of the year, the most goliardic come together in a parade in central London to continue the festivities with floats, bands and processions.

Then we leave London to Paris exploring the city and doing shopping, admiring all the most famous tourist sites including the Eiffel Tower, the Latin Quarter and the Champs-Elysées before continuing to Amsterdam and coming back to Paris. This city is definitely famous for its red light district, but there are many other things to do and see, including the Anne Frank House.

Finally we fly back from Paris to India. When, looking out the window, we see only clouds, and realize that this without a doubt was the right kind of trip and see so many things just sitting down to watch by the window, meeting some great people and have experience something exceptional which certainly we would want to repeat this experience, again and again.
