Chef Movie Release Delayed

When Jagga Jasoos was announced for July 14, it seemed obvious that the weekend could not accommodate the three other outings that were already scheduled for that date. Very quickly, it was announced that the thriller MOM would come out a week earlier in order to avoid the conflict and there was a good chance that at least one other film would follow its example. And it is finally Chef, who also avoids the confrontation.

This official remake of Jon Favreau's film is a feel-good culinary movie featuring Saif Ali Khan in the lead role and directed by Raja Krishna Menon to whom we owe the much-loved Airlift. In order to confirm the announcement, the producers have published several photographs of the film, pictures which are denoted by a careful and luminous aesthetic.

At the announcement of the project, the director was amazed that so few films are based on cooking in a country like India. One of the latest films to have used cooking as a theme in its narrative was the extraordinary The Lunchbox, although the film went much further from this theme. In a more commercial register, Daawat-e-Ishq had tried it with much less talent and less success also. Saif Ali Khan had already interpreted a chef in Salaam Namaste, although the kitchen had no impact on the scenario.

With a little-treated theme, a very promising young director and a talented actor we can say that Chef presents as one of the potential good surprises of the year. It will take more than expected. Indeed, if MOM has staggered its release by only one week, Chef is postponed by almost three months! The film will be released on Indian screens on October 6, 2017. For the time being, this date would offer the film a solo release.

Here is a an opportunity for Saif Ali Khan to have the best possible release conditions for this film and to aim for a success that he needs after his recent failures, including Rangoon that released in February. This change of date is also very good news for Jagga Jasoos who went from three potential opponents to one.

Ironically, it is the least promising film that has for the moment decided to stay, namely the biopic Haseena: The Queen Of Mumbai with Shraddha Kapoor. The actress who has not signed any real success since Baaghi would more than ever need a solo release after chaining two complete setbacks and a just decent average.

Still, it is reassuring to see producers of Chef preferred to quietly change dates rather than rush to a useless confrontation. We can only wish the film benefits fully from its solo release!
