This is without a doubt one of the most tragic and shocking news that has shaken Indian cinema in recent years. Sridevi died on the night of February 24, 2018, at the age of 54 years. According to her family, she succumbed to a heart attack. Sridevi was in Dubai with her husband Boney Kapoor and their daughter Khushi at the time. She leaves behind two girls as well as her husband. All our condolences go obviously to the family.
In addition to her young age, the news is shocking. Sridevi still remains an icon of Indian cinema and fashion. She is a superstar who had illuminated the red carpet of the last Filmfare Awards where she was nominated as Best Actress. She has distinguished herself in the Southern film industry in only a few films. Since the 80s, she has also gone on to the conquest of Hindi cinema with hits such as Himmatwala, Maqsad, Mr. India, Chandni, Lamhe and many others.
As an exceptional actress and a legendary dancer, she got unprecedented popularity throughout India, in no less than five industries: Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada. She has won five Filmfare Awards, for three Hindi, one Tamil, and one Telugu film.
Sridevi's fame has been of such magnitude that she has been described by all journalists of her time as the first female superstar in the history of Indian cinema! Confirming this feminist icon image, she returned to the cinema in 2012 with English Vinglish, an independent film about the emancipation of housewives that had been a totally unexpected surprise hit.
The actress just missed 15 years of the big screen! With the Padma Shri Award in 2013, she was awarded the highest possible civilian award for an Indian citizen. On July 7, 2017, she starred in the movie Mom. With decent critical and commercial success, the film has especially had the merit of being worth to its superstar a new wave of praise for her hallucinating performance. It was the 300th film of her career!
Sridevi brought with her several decades of cinema, passion, and especially a legendary talent that is simply unmatched. Her brutal and painful disappearance is extremely sad. There is no doubt that this tragic event will shake her family as well as the entire Indian film industry and an army of countless fans across the country and internationally. May this great lady of the Indian cinema rest in peace.
